Chasing the sub-second draw in dry fire using the Mantis X10 Elite.
From concealment, I attempt to put 10 shots in 5 seconds onto a standard size playing card that is 5 yards away. The firearm used is my Every Day Carry pistol, Sig P365 Fuse with the factory equipped Romeo X Micro Red Dot Sight.
i was “only” able to put 7 of the 10 shots on the playing card, the other 3 were near misses on the 8” circular B-8 target behind the card.
This is an example of what is possible with proper training and practice.
I attended a 3 day Deliberate Coaching class in May 2025, conducted by Brian Hill of The Complete Combatant. By the final day of the class I had earned the right to shoot the “Core 4” drill for rank.
Using a more efficient draw stroke that I learned from coaching in the class, I was able to shoot a clean run on the 4 strings of fire with a 77% score. This earned me both a Purple Belt rank and an Accurate Ant patch.
Next time I’ll be gunning for a Brown or preferably Black Belt rank.
USPSA Classifier CM 99-02 Diamond Cutter
Standing in the shooting aream facing uprange, turn and engage each of the 4 partial targets (obscured with no-shoots) 2 times each.
Results: 6 Alphas, 2 Charlies in 4,.02 seconds.
This video is a force on force exercise where two armed opponents at contact distance, engage in hand, fighting, each looking for an opportunity to deploy a tool.
In this case, I am able to use my hand fighting skills too make the space and time required to draw a pistol, while my opponent (a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt) chose to go to a knife.
A knife is an excellent choice while still in contact, but a poor choice when distance is involved
Jay Martin Combatives Camping Weekend, April 25-27 in Waterloo, AL.
I served as the primary firearms instructor for this event and as the Assistant Instructor for the Combatives training portion. This a video I made of my various force-on-force training evolutions as well as a ‘Stress Shoot’.

Shivworks Extreme Close Quarters Concepts Class, May 2025 in Wilmington, Ohio.
This is a force-on-force combatives evolution between myself, on the ground, and ‘Stabby Pete’. The scenario is that I am a ‘good guy’ that has been cold-cocked by the standing bad guy. I am equipped with a concealed Simunition pistol, we are both equipped with knives. I am not allowed to go to the pistol until there has been significant engagement by the aggressor.
Yes, it is cold, wet and slippery muddy - real world conditions. ‘Stabby” Pete is a BJJ purple belt of similar age and has about 15 years of Shivworks/Combatives experience.
Example of me training in a force-on-force training evolution from the Shivworks Extreme Close Quarters Concepts class in Orlando, FL, Feb 2019. I’m wearing the tan pants.
In this scenario each person has a grip on the muzzle of the opponents Simunition training pistol. These are Glock 19 replicas that fire small paint pellets with enough force to leave welts - proving each participant with motivation to avoid getting shot. These training pistols are fully functional, meaning that it is just as easy to jam them as it is with an actual pistol.
Just a fun video of me shooting the USPSA Area 6 Championship match in April 2016.
I was shooting in the “Production” Division using a customized EAA Tanfoglio Stock 2 Witness Elite, a Traditional Double Action pistol chambered in 9mm. The division has a magazine capacity limitation of 10 rounds and a requirement to shoot the first shot of each stage in double action mode.
